Previous<\/a> <a class=\"nextPage\" href=\"SH13121\">Next &gt;<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>2016 &#8211; MX-5 &#8211; Engine<\/h2>\n<p><a name=\"id0140f4559000\" id=\"id0140f4559000\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR [SKYACTIV-G 2.0]<\/h3>\n<p><a name=\"id0140f455900001\" id=\"id0140f455900001\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Purpose<\/h4>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>The gear shift indicator, built into the instrument cluster, informs the driver that a gear position or shift up\/down operation is recommended according to the driving conditions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0140f455900002\" id=\"id0140f455900002\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Function<\/h4>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>The PCM sends a gear shift indicator illumination request to the instrument cluster via CAN communication.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The instrument cluster displays the gear shift indicator based on the gear shift-related information signals sent from the PCM as CAN signals.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0140f455900003\" id=\"id0140f455900003\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Construction<\/h4>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>The gear shift indicator is built into the instrument cluster.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AMXUUN00001588.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AMXUUN00001588.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"id0140f455900004\" id=\"id0140f455900004\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Operation<\/h4>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>The PCM compares the target gear speed (calculated from each signal) and the actual gear speed to determine a gear shift indicator illumination request.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM2ZZN00003443.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AM2ZZN00003443.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n                  <b>Target gear speed (recommended gear position)<\/b><\/p>\n<li>\n<p>The target gear speed is determined by the vehicle speed, accelerator pedal opening angle, ascent rate, altitude, and steering angle.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n                  <b>Actual gear speed (current gear position)<\/b><\/p>\n<li>\n<p>The actual gear speed is determined by the vehicle speed, engine speed, tire diameter, final gear ratio, and gear engagement.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>The gear shift indicator illumination\/off conditions are as follows:<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0140f455900005\" id=\"id0140f455900005\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Gear shift indicator illumination condition<\/h5>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>There are three gear shift indicator illumination patterns; normal operation, shift-down recommended operation, and shift-up recommended operation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n                  <b>Normal operation<\/b><\/p>\n<li>\n<p>When the following condition is met, the currently selected gear position is indicated.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>Target gear speed and actual gear speed are equal<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"center\">Example: the following figure indicates that the currently selected gear position is 5th gear.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AMXUUN00001253.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AMXUUN00001253.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n                  <b>Shift-down recommended operation<\/b><\/p>\n<li>\n<p>If a shift-down operation is recommended when the following condition is met (determines smooth driveability is difficult), the recommended gear position is indicated at the same time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>Target gear speed is lower than actual gear speed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"center\">Example: The following figure indicates that a shift-down operation to 4th gear is recommended.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AMXUUN00001254.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AMXUUN00001254.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n                  <b>Shift-up recommended operation<\/b><\/p>\n<li>\n<p>If a shift-up operation is recommended when the following condition is met (determines fuel economy worsens), the recommended gear position is indicated at the same time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>Target gear speed is higher than actual gear speed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"center\">Example: The following figure indicates that a shift-up operation to 6th gear is recommended.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AMXUUN00001255.GIF\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"absmiddle\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/16ND\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/AMXUUN00001255.GIF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0140f455900006\" id=\"id0140f455900006\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Gear shift indicator off condition<\/h5>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>When any one of the following conditions is met, the gear shift indicator turns off.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n<li>\n<p>Vehicle is stopped<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Shift lever is in N position or R position<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>\n<p>If the vehicle is driven with the gear not changed when a shift-down\/up operation is recommended, the gear shift indicator may temporarily turn off.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a name=\"id0140f455900007\" id=\"id0140f455900007\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Fail-safe<\/h4>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n<p>Not applicable<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>          <a class=\"prevPage\" href=\"SH13119\">&lt;
