It is primarily designed for laptops to ensure low noise operation and longer battery life.<\/p>\n<p>Thinkfan configuration file (<code>\/etc\/thinkfan.conf<\/code> on debian-based GNU\/Linux distros like Ubuntu) is rather straightforward to setup, details are available on this <a title=\"Lenovo Thinkpad X300 and Linux \u2013 Configuration and power management\" href=\"https:\/\/chroot-me.in\/blog\/2009\/04\/lenovo-thinkpad-x300-and-linux-configuration-and-power-management\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However since a recent version of <code>thinkpad-acpi<\/code> kernel module, the old and deprecated interface <code>\/proc\/acpi\/ibm\/thermal<\/code> was removed. This change was not ported to thinkfan default configuration on Ubuntu 14.10 and I assume to the upstream code as well.<\/p>\n<p>I will report a bug to both projects, but in the meantime, you can update thinkfan configuration file with the following:<\/p>\n<p><code><\/p>\n<p># Path could differs<br \/>\nhwmon \/sys\/devices\/platform\/coretemp.0\/hwmon\/hwmon1\/temp1_input (0)<br \/>\nhwmon \/sys\/devices\/platform\/coretemp.0\/hwmon\/hwmon1\/temp2_input (0)<br \/>\nhwmon \/sys\/devices\/platform\/coretemp.0\/hwmon\/hwmon1\/temp3_input (0)<\/p>\n<p># Settings for a T420s w\/ Intel Sandy Bridge CPU<br \/>\n(0,     0,      40)<br \/>\n(1,     35,     70)<br \/>\n(2,     65,     80)<br \/>\n(5,     75,     128)<\/p>\n<p><\/code><\/p>\n<p>That&rsquo;s all folks!<\/p>\n<p>BTW, the Lenovo Thinkpad T420s is the perfect laptop.
